Big Creek sets Redneck Christmas parade n Bruce aldermen consider lease. By Mack Spencer Monitor-Herald Those who wanted to know when Big Creek would have another party like the one held for the community building's open house now have an answer: Dec. 13. That night at 6, the town's annual Redneck Christmas parade - if you can push it, pull it, drive it or drag it, you can enter it - will roll off. After the parade, a big fireworks display will light the skies over downtown Big Creek. Inside the community center, refreshments, including hot dogs and drinks, will be served, and Bobby Hood and Sheryl Fleming will again provide entertainment. In other business: n The board approved leasing the downtown gas station building to Dale Mitchell. n Village clerk Doris Flemons will investigate the possibility of securing a town credit card for emergency gas purchases. n The town tax roll of $7,681.54 was adopted. Bruce Aldermen postponed action on a new lease for Community Eldercare at the Bruce Community Living Center. The lease offered by the company extends the company's claim on the former Bruce Hospital building to 10 years, with two five-year options. The board decided to study the lease further and may hold a special meeting later in the month to consider the lease. The company requested a longer lease to help justify the cost of some major repairs and renovations at the facility. In other business: * The board declined the library commission's recommendation to accept Lynn Inman's bid to replace the library's air conditioning and heating system. In recommending Inman, whose bid was higher than Larry Joe James' bid, the commission said Inman had more experience installing systems of the size the library requires. The board approved James' low bid, saying there was no proof James could not handle the job. * The chamber of commerce secured $1,500 from the board for promotion of the city. * The board decided that the town should create an application and advertise the position before hiring a zoning administrator. William Jenkins had offered to take on the duties. * The board authorized a letter demanding cleanup of a property on McSweyn Street. * The police department received a matching grant from the Bureau of Justice to purchase bulletproof vests. * City clerk Rita Talford and police chief Stan Evans will attend training conferences in December. Vardaman The board postponed discussion on participation in Three Rivers Planning and Dvelopment District's community college tuition assistance plan, and on updating the flood prevention ordinance. The board agreed to advertise for prices on purchasing emergency generators and for interest rates from possible depositories. Permission for a used trailer to be placed in the town limits was denied. The town will pursue securing a Sam's Club card. Cellular South representative Tim Long pitched his company's services to the board. The board postponed action until the current cellular service provider can respond. Town clerk Barbara Tedder will attend certification update Dec. 17-19 in Jackson. Derma Aldermen approved a membership application for new customers seeking hookup to Derma Waterworks. The board also voted to require picture identification for new customers to help avoid the possibility of identity theft. The board adopted the 2008 tax rolls. Town clerk Deneen Russell will attend a certification update Dec. 17-19.
