Sales tax returns mixed

at state's new fiscal year

n Calhoun City and Vardaman go up; Bruce, Houston and Okolona decline.

By Mack Spencer

Monitor-Herald

The first month of the state's fiscal year was a good one for Calhoun City, Mantee and Vardaman.

Sales tax returns for July climbed about $2,600 in Calhoun City from July a year ago. That was the biggest dollar increase for the month in any of the Twin Counties-area municipalities.

Mantee had the next biggest increase over July a year ago, almost $565, which was an increase of more than 25 percent. Vardaman's returns grew almost $300, continuing a trend of a couple of years of increasing sales tax revenue.

Houston's collections declined steeply, almost $4,000 from July 2007, while Okolona also dropped, by almost $1,000. Bruce's string of increases ended with July's report, as the returns there declined about $700.

Houlka's sales tax returns fell about $1,400 from July 2007, continuing a slide that started with last year's closure of Davis Furniture-Astrolounger.

Some of the smaller communities did well with sales in July. Big Creek's collections were boosted by more than $500, almost tripling the results from July 2007.

Derma edged up a little more than $100 in July, while Pittsboro inched up by about $17.

A tough economy for new homes and furniture continued to hit Woodland hard, as sales tax returns slid by $1,700. Slate Springs, the smallest town in the Twin Counties, lost $40 in sales taxes from July 2007.
