CALHOUN CITY - The second edition of the Ace Cannon Festival blows into town Friday night.

Country music up-and-comer Jake Owen, a finalist for New Male Vocalist of the Year by the Academy of Country Music, will bring his brand of music to the Square for a free concert Friday at 9 p.m.

Owen will perform selections from his repertory, including new favorites "Something About a Woman," "Startin' with Me" and "Don't Think I Can't Love You." Two 45-minute sets are expected.

Owen's stage, complete with massive video screens, will be set up on the west side of the Square. Concertgoers should bring lawn chairs; seating will be on the street and on the inner part of the Square.

"Come early," recommended Chuck Lovorn, owner of co-sponsor The Creative Group.`

Other entertainment will be available until Owen takes the stage at 9.

Southern Belle, one of the concert's co-sponsors, will hold the second edition of its popular Thong Party under the gazebo on the Square Friday at 7 p.m.

Local restaurants will offer a little of everything as food vendors on the Square Friday night. R&G Soul Food, Paisley's Boardwalk, Mark's One Stop and Sweet Potato Sweets will offer such delights as steak, chicken, pizza by the slice and pie by the slice.

Festival T-shirts and posters, tourist information and more will be available at the Chamber Spirit committee's hospitality tent on the Square Friday, and City Hall and many businesses will remain open late to serve the needs of visitors.

Saturday

Events get under way early on Saturday, with registration for the second annual 5-kilometer run opening at 7 a.m. The 8 a.m. race starts and ends at the town tennis courts, following the same route as last year.

Vendors for the 38th annual arts and crafts festival will open up at 8 a.m. as well with handicrafts, games, books, jewelry food and more. For the second year, the arts and crafts vendors will be located at the town walkpath west of Calhoun City High School.

The high school parking lot will play host to a car show during the arts and crafts festival, as well.

Calhoun City's favorite son and the weekend's namesake will perform at the football field at 8 p.m., sponsored by Cannon Motors. Ace Cannon's smooth sax sound will again wrap around favorites such as "Yakety Sax" and "Tuff."

The mellow harmonies and madcap antics of the Bollinger Family Theatre players from Bruce will perform before Ace at 7 p.m.

The high school band boosters will sell concessions to help raise funds for the upcoming performance season.
